Janis Cohen—President & Founder
Janis Cohen started Purple Power shortly after beginning treatment for her Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. She is a vibrant robust woman with a smile on her face that brings joy to all who encountered her. One day, when sitting in her hairdresser’s chair, she saw her reflection in the mirror and decided to get a purple streak put in her hair as a little “pick-me-up.” When asked the significance of the streak, without hesitation, she replied, “To create awareness and raise support for Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. I’m starting a non-profit called Purple Power.” And, so an idea and a cause we're born.
Our Mission is to help find a cure or to extend the lives and quality of life for people with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. This will be accomplished through funding programs that increase awareness and fund research for cures.
Our Vision is to be recognized world-wide as a leader in providing information, support and funding for research in the area of Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. We will raise funds specifically for research and eradication of Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. Purple Power will select with whom it works based on exhibiting the highest ethical standards, shared interests and goals, responsible use of funds and expertise in designated areas. Our ultimate goal is the total and complete eradication of Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer.
As Pink is the symbolic color for Breast Cancer and Red is the symbolic color for Heart Disease, Purple represents our effort because it symbolizes not only power, but spiritual fulfillment and pride. We want to be representative of the four stages of power:
- Stage I: The Power of Education & Awareness – Bring this disease to the forefront.
- Stage II: The Power of Money - Raise the funds needed to help our research teams find a cure.
- Stage III: The Power of Support – Providing for the emotional well-being of those diagnosed and their “family unit” as well.
- Stage IV: The Power of Ending This Disease – Don’t stop until we win the fight.
Streak with us! Add a stripe of purple to your hair too to help create awareness throughout the world. Share our cause. Pin Us, Tweet Us, Face Us, Post Us … we want … we need to be the next on-going trend on social media, and NEED YOU to help us get there. Please use the hash tag #ColorMePurple when doing so. A CURE is possible with you behind us.
Finally, please know that we are not a large organization. There is no huge paid staff. Our organization is staffed by volunteers who believe in our fight. We are not housed in an extravagant office building, and our organizational costs are kept to a bare minimum. The vast majority of all donations will go exactly where they need to … research to find a cure, education and support.
